Folic acid is used to treat or prevent folate deficiency anaemia, as low folate levels can lead to certain types of anaemia. It is essential for the formation of healthy cells, particularly red blood cells. People who are pregnant or may become pregnant take folic acid to prevent serious birth defects, such as spina bifida. It is also used in the treatments of other conditions, including depression, stroke, and memory decline.
